About T&D

Our History

The Downing family has continuously conducted business in the community of Anamosa for over 100 years. Beginning with Dirk’s great-grandfather and his partner J.E. Tyler, Tyler & Downing, Inc. (1904-1986) was primarily a butcher shop. Four generations of Downings (Don Arnold “Dad” Downing, Lee Arnold ”Bud” Downing, Don Andrew “Buddy” Downing, Dirk Andrew “D.A.” Downing) could always be found behind the meat counter, in the friendliest and arguably the most entertaining business in Anamosa. There are stories that have been told for over 100 years, stories of practical jokes, funny occurrences and the legendary “Christmas Parties” in the back room. Butchers by profession, the Downing men have served on numerous civic boards including three generations elected to serve as president of the Anamosa School Board. They were involved in the Masonic Temple, Jaycees, Volunteer Fire Dept. (all four men), Hospital Board, Cemetery Board, Chamber of Commerce, Little League Sponsors (45 years). Their wives were independent women who raised the family, maintained the home and held professional jobs as nurses, teachers and entrepreneurs. The current high school football field is named “Downing Field” in recognition of the family’s service to the school district.

The fourth generation of Downings, Dirk and wife, Brenda, are the owners of Tyler & Downing’s Eatery. Spawned from a dream to work together in their own hometown, they have created a very special experience. While Brenda is the Executive Chef and Dirk President/Janitor, their strengths complement each other and their passion for their endeavor is obvious. What they have created is special, unique and delicious!! Dirk and Brenda proudly welcome you and your family to eat, drink and be merry, in the ”way cool” Tyler & Downing’s Eatery.

You will experience our family’s traditions of service, value and quality in a historical building that is a springboard for you to create new traditions of your own. Tyler & Downing’s Eatery welcomes you.
